Philippi, Greece | Where Paul's Prison Became a Place of Miracles

A vision in the night appeared to the Apostle Paul of a man from Macedonia, pleading with him to come and help (Acts 16:9-11). Concluding that God was calling him to preach the Good News in Macedonia as well, Paul and Silas arrived in Philippi, a leading Roman colony in the province of Macedonia. It is here Paul established the first Christian community in Europe.

The Biblical Significance of Philippi

Philippi was an ancient kingdom of Macedonia , named after King Philip II who reigned from 359 BC until his death in 336 BC. Never heard of him? No worries. You may have heard about his son who eclipsed his fame, ascending the throne at the age of twenty. His name was Alexander the Great .

By the first century, Philippi had become a strategic Roman military post located along the Via Egnatia , an important road constructed by the Romans in the 2nd century BC to link their colonies and provide a way to move their troops. The road began at the coast of ancient Macedonia, crossed through the cities of Thessaloniki and Philippi, and ended in Byzantium (Istanbul). The Romans set up milestones along the road to mark the way , creating stations every 10 miles for travelers to feed and water their horses, mules, or oxen. Every 25 miles—the standard distance one could cover by foot each day—stations were set up where the travelers could find places of rest and food to eat. This was the road Paul used on his missionary travels to reach Thessaloniki, 115 miles southwest of Philippi. So that's how he got around!

It was in this place Paul and Silas, Jewish men with Roman citizenship , were dragged into the marketplace to face the chief authorities. They were accused of throwing the city into an uproar after Paul cast out a spirit of divination from a slave girl that had been harassing them, obliterating her ability to earn her master a profit. Following their beating, they were thrown into a prison nearby (Acts 16:16-24). Their imprisonment was illegal, yet neither one demanded what was rightfully theirs —trial before sentencing and punishment.

In the prison, Paul and Silas were held in stocks—also a form of Roman torture , stretching their legs apart until they were nearly out of joint. In the midst of their suffering, they roused themselves to pray and sing hymns to God, becoming a living message to the prisoners around them . What prayers were they praying? Which declarations might they have been making from God's word? Paul was a rabbi , one who had studied Scripture diligently. These verses would have been a perfect fit: “The ropes of the wicked are coiled around me, but I did not forget Your Torah. At midnight I rise to praise you, because of Your righteous rulings” (Psalm 119:61-62). Rather than stand before the unrighteous in the courts of men, Paul and Silas may have been storming the courts of heaven.

Whatever their prayers were, God heard and answered with such a great earthquake that “suddenly the foundations of the prison were shaken,” loosening the chains of all who were bound. This Divine intervention led to the salvation of the jailer and his entire household —and to Paul and Silas's ultimate exoneration (Acts 16:25-40). Less than ten years later, Paul would write his letter to the Philippian church from his prison cell in Rome.

This ancient prison found in the ruins of Philippi gives us a good look into the type of confinement Paul and Silas may have experienced. Even prison could not keep them from experiencing God's miraculous provision for them to complete the good work given them to do.

What to Expect in Philippi Today

Down the road from the ancient ruins of Philippi is the site commemorating the baptism of Lydia. We read about Lydia in the book of Acts, when Paul and Silas ventured out of Philippi to find a place of prayer next to a river. They encountered women who had gathered there, and met Lydia, a God-fearing Gentile woman from Thyatira, a seller of purple cloth. It made sense that Lydia would have relocated to this region. Purple cloth was reserved for the elite —emperors, senators, military leaders—and Philippi was a primary outpost for the Roman army . Lydia listened to Paul's message—and the Lord opened her heart to respond . She and her household were baptized in the river (Acts 16:13-15).

This place carries so much peace! A narrow river runs through the shady banks, while a church called “The Baptistery of Lydia” is situated nearby . Maybe it's because it is so young (built in 1974) that this place of worship stands in stark contrast to the other churches we'd visited throughout Turkey and Greece. The interior is bathed in natural light . The colors are vibrant, with cool tones of blue, magenta, and purple. White marbled walls and floors provide a perfect contrast to the black rod iron chandeliers. It was truly a place of beauty.

Lydia lived up to her name which means “beautiful one” or “noble one.” Following her baptism, her first action was to insist that Paul and Silas come stay at her home, extending hospitality. There is something so refreshing about hospitality! The Greek word for “hospitable” means “a lover of hospitality, generous to guests.” We can be hospitable not just with our homes, but also with our time and attention —in each instance, it's an outpouring of love that says, “I see you... I welcome you... I invite you into my space.” Let's make room for hospitality to thrive.

Why Christians Should Visit

The community of believers in Philippi comprised the first church that Paul founded in Europe on his 2nd missionary journey. Living amidst this wealthy Roman colony comprised of military and political figures, the early believers were commended by Paul in his letter to the Philippians for sharing in the Good News (1:5), for their intercession (1:19), for shining like lights in the world (2:15), for their strength under control i.e. “gentleness” (4:5), and for their extreme generosity (4:15-16). In these areas, they excelled.

What God did in the lives of the early believers, He can do in your life, too . There's nothing that can compare with putting your feet in these places where Biblical history took place. The land retains memory! (Genesis 4:10). There is a wealth of inheritance in Philippi for Christians to receive—and the blessing you carry to leave behind. Istanbul carries a tremendous inheritance. It was one of the first regions ever reached with the Gospel, leading to a legacy that lasted for generations.

The Biblical Significance of Istanbul

It's hard to believe this beautiful city with such historic and Biblical significance isn't mentioned by name in the Bible. Located in the Roman province of Asia during the first century A.D., there was a thriving Jewish presence in this region. While there is no mention of the Apostle Paul spending time in this city, we do know that his influence extended throughout all of Asia. At one point, he was forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia (Acts 16:6). I can't help but wonder what was taking place in the natural and spiritual realms for Paul to receive such a warning. This obstacle was overcome a few years later, as “all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord” (Acts 19:10).

Hagia Sophia was a Greek Orthodox church for over 1,000 years. Established in 360 A.D., it remained a center of the Christian faith until the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire in 1453. It has been a church, a museum, and now operates as a mosque.

What to Expect in Istanbul Today

Did you know? Istanbul is the only city in the world that straddles two continents, Europe and Asia. As one of Turkey's largest cities, it has a population of 15.6 million people. It's over 2.5. times larger than New York City , and the 6th largest city in the world. Wow! Istanbul has undergone several name changes throughout the years, including Byzantium, Constantinople, and Stamboul—even known for a time as “The Paris of the East.”

Istanbul is a diverse city situated on numerous hilly streets , reminiscent of San Francisco. It really is the city that never sleeps. In the early morning hours, you can hear a cacophony of car horns continually blaring—some as a warning, others in frustration, and many just for the pleasure of attempting to create melodies with sounds from the other drivers. There’s no other way to explain it!

Istanbul is also a city of paradox , where patience runs thin but public naps by adults in the park are plentiful. People sprawl out in the beautiful garden parks during the day alongside the stray dogs and cats, which are microchipped and monitored. The Turks have a special love for children and families, and have a lot of pride in their country and heritage. Turkish flags are everywhere! With the current exchange rates, traveling here is extremely affordable. A nice dinner out for 7 adults costs around $40. It felt like a throwback to the 1990’s.

The Holy Spirit commissioned Paul and Barnabas for kingdom ministry from Antioch, a place His presence was seen and felt. Why shouldn't we come and ask for the same?

The Biblical Significance of Antioch

Antioch Seleucia is one of the many Antioch’s in the Roman territories during the first century AD, but the only Antioch where believers were first called “Christianoi.” It was here Barnabas was sent to check out all that was happening —and he found a place where the grace of God was present to be seen . As a result, Barnabas traveled 150 miles over a mountainous region to the city of Tarsus, bringing Saul back with him to Antioch. For an entire year, Barnabas and Saul met together with the community of believers, teaching a large number of people (see Acts 11:22-24).

After they had spent time in prayer and fasting, Barnabas and Saul were commissioned for the work God had called them to do . It was on their first missionary journey that Saul's name was changed to Paul. Interesting! Paul returned to Antioch on several occasions, launching out from this city for all three of his travels to spread the Good News.

The facade of the Church of Saint Peter was originally built by the Crusaders in 1100, but the oldest parts of the church date back to the 4th or 5th century.

What to Expect in Antioch Today

Located less than 20 miles from the Syrian border, the ancient city of Antioch is a perfect place to begin a pilgrimage in this nation rich with biblical significance. After an inexpensive flight from Istanbul, Gabriel and I picked up a pre-arranged rental car at the airport to begin our cross-country travel west to the Mediterranean coast. Driving away from the airport, we were surprised to learn our car had no gas! We later found out this is a common practice with rental car agencies in Turkey. Thankfully, there were a number of gas stations a few miles away where we could fill our tank.

As we entered the downtown area of Hatay (Antioch), we felt like we had stepped back in time. After getting lost on one-way streets and hilly dirt roads, we were finally successful in finding our hotel. The setting in this quaint rural area carried both the charm of village life and the conveniences of modern living.

Our first goal was to visit the ancient cave church where early believers first worshipped. As Paul and Barnabas were anointed for kingdom ministry in Antioch , it seemed fitting to ask for the same in this historic setting. Carved into the side of a mountain, the interior of “The Church of St Peter” is small with the recessed cave and its escape route blocked off to visitors. The 5th century mosaic floors give a sense of the beauty this cave once held.

We couldn't help but notice a certain statue featured prominently throughout the city through signs, billboards, and even a larger-than-life topiary positioned at the entrance to the city. It became our quest to locate this strange-looking artifact! Knowing we'd find it in a local museum, we ended up in the wrong spot at the Hatay History Museum, a museum devoted to the Turkish heritage. We were so glad to find our way to the Hatay Archeology Museum (located here ), and see this statue of Hittite King Suppiluliuma who ruled in the 9th century B.C.E. The Hittite people believed the king was assigned by God to be protector and "Gate Guard" of society. This statue is one of the oldest artifacts ever discovered in Turkey.

The Hittites hold an important place in biblical history . Abraham bought the burial ground for his wife Sarah from Ephron the Hittite, even though he didn't want to exchange any money for the land. Bathsheba, who later became King David's wife, was first married to Uriah the Hittite. Though God reassigned Hittite territory to the Israelite people, their memory continues on through the pages of His Book.

Very few Christians today realize that Cappadocia is a region in Turkey mentioned in Scripture. Peter wrote his first letter to the believers here—those who met in cave churches to worship the Lord. This brings a whole new light to the words he shared!

The Biblical Significance of Cappadocia

Though Cappadocia is only mentioned by name twice in Scripture (Acts 2:9 and 1 Peter 1:1), it doesn't lessen the significance of this region or the importance of the people who lived here. For centuries, the people of this region used the mountainous caves as homes, as places of worship, and as hiding places from their enemies. Food was scarce, as the layers of volcanic ash made the ground inhospitable for growing vegetables and plants, making trade with those who traveled through the region essential for life.

After the death, burial, and resurrection of Yeshua, Jewish people from Cappadocia were in Jerusalem for the biblical celebration of Shavuot when they suddenly heard people speaking about the wonders of God in their own language. They were amazed and perplexed. Peter stood up to explain to them what this phenomenon meant, as it was a fulfillment of a prophetic word given by the prophet Joel many years earlier. Making clear from the Jewish scriptures that Yeshua was the Messiah and Lord they had waited for , many chose to believe on Him that day.

Peter wrote his first letter to the Jewish believers in Cappadocia as he confirmed their new identity, stating that they were “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession” (1 Peter 2:9).

Off the beaten path, our photographer took us to this ancient church hidden away on a hillside far from view. The interior was filled with frescos painted hundreds of years earlier. What a magnificent treasure.

What to Expect in Cappadocia Today

Cappadocia became synonymous for its incredible hot air balloon adventures, it was known for its striking rock foundations, “fairy chimneys,” cave dwellings and natural wonders . In 1984, the first hot air balloon was brought to Turkey for a marketing project—and today, more than 150 balloons ascend every morning with baskets packed with visitors from all over the world.

Gabriel and I were not expecting the breathtakingly beautiful scenery we saw on our three-hour drive from Tarsus to Cappadocia. The mountain pass reminded us of our time in the Pacific Northwest in Washington State, only on a much larger scale. By the time we reached Göreme, the familiar faded away as it felt like we had stepped into a whole different world.

Cappadocia never ceased to amaze us. We could have easily spent weeks here exploring all this region has to offer. Our first morning, we arranged for a hot air balloon flight, waking up at 4:30am to catch the shuttle at our hotel. It was worth every bit of the loss of sleep! Safety is a top priority—from lift off to touch down, the entire flight felt like we were gliding effortlessly through an IMAX movie, carried by a gentle breeze. Even if you have a fear of flying or of heights, this is one experience you won't want to miss. It's spectacular!

In the afternoon, we attempted to adventure out to explore the cave churches that are numerous throughout the area, only to discover trouble with our car's engine. While our hotel arranged for a mechanic, Gabriel and I had time to wander through the village. I'm so glad we did! We found Yemeni the Shoemaker ( shop located here ) who was skilled in making leather sandals that reminded us of those Jesus and His disciples might have worn. I bought a pair, and wore them every day from then on. They're perfect!

With our car fixed, we drove off and found an ancient cave church ( located here ), choosing to visit this place instead of the more crowded spot for tourists. As we stood in the darkness of the cave, I opened my Bible to read from Peter's letter to the believers in Cappadocia.

Peter emphasized the Lord had called them “out of darkness into His marvelous light.” He spoke to the “sojourner” in this land of sojourners, encouraging them to “love one another fervently from a pure heart.” And Peter called them “living stones” in a place replete with stones of awe-inspiring shapes and sizes. The context of scripture now took on new meaning for us, as we saw how the Holy Spirit inspired Peter to use vivid imagery from their lives to impart spiritual truth . Amazing.

Cappadocia is one of those “hidden gems” for most American travelers , but a well-known destination getaway for people all over Europe and into the Middle East. Before Cappadocia became synonymous for its incredible hot air balloon adventures, it was known for its striking rock foundations, “fairy chimneys,” cave dwellings and natural wonders . In 1984, the first hot air balloon was brought to Turkey for a marketing project—and today, more than 150 balloons ascend every morning with baskets packed with visitors from all over the world.

Gabriel and I were not expecting the breathtakingly beautiful scenery we saw on our three-hour drive from Tarsus to Cappadocia. The mountain pass reminded us of our time in the Pacific Northwest in Washington State, only on a much larger scale. By the time we reached Göreme, the familiar faded away as it felt like we had stepped into a whole different world.

Cappadocia never ceased to amaze us. We could have easily spent weeks here exploring all this region has to offer. Our first morning, we arranged for a hot air balloon flight, waking up at 4:30am to catch the shuttle at our hotel. It was worth every bit of the loss of sleep! Safety is a top priority—from lift off to touch down, the entire flight felt like we were gliding effortlessly through an IMAX movie, carried by a gentle breeze. Even if you have a fear of flying or of heights, this is one experience you won't want to miss. It's spectacular!

In the afternoon, we attempted to adventure out to explore the cave churches that are numerous throughout the area, only to discover trouble with our car's engine. While our hotel arranged for a mechanic, Gabriel and I had time to wander through the village. I'm so glad we did! We found Yemeni the Shoemaker ( shop located here ) who was skilled in making leather sandals that reminded us of those Jesus and His disciples might have worn. I bought a pair, and wore them every day from then on. They're perfect!

When you think about the city of Ephesus from the first century, what's the first impression that comes to mind? Paul's incredible letter to the Ephesians—and his narrow escape from the mob (Acts 19)—may be your only points of reference. Would it surprise you to learn Ephesus was a place of wealth and opulence? A city of power and beauty? The center of religion and idol worship? While all these descriptions are true, the people of that day saw something more. The citizens considered Ephesus to be a notoriously evil place.

The Biblical Significance of Ephesus

In the 1st century A.D., Ephesus had the reputation of being a corrupt city, yet it was from this place that Paul chose to live for two years, resulting in the Good News spreading into all of Asia. In 55 A.D., Paul's first letter to the community in Corinth was written here. So were the writings of John more than 40 years later: each of John's three letters (1, 2, 3 John); and the Gospel of John, written “that you may believe that Jesus is the Son of God , and that by believing you may have life in His Name ” (John 20:31). Talk about moving in the opposite spirit!

Titled “The Crown Jewel of Asia Minor” by Rome, Ephesus was second in size and importance only to Rome itself. It was the most sophisticated, cultured, and pagan city in the entire Roman empire. The slave trade had a thriving market there. It's estimated that nearly 50% of the residents in Ephesus were slaves . A practice called “Infant Exposure” allowed mothers to abandon their newborn infants for whatever reason they chose, including economics, health of the baby, or birth defects. The babies would be stripped of their clothing and placed in a designated open field to die. Fathers were given the option to choose to accept or reject their babies . Slave traders would then come to the field and pick over the infants , choosing the strongest to take home and raise up, until the children were old enough to be sold.

Imagine how these people would feel reading Paul's letter to them: “He chose us in the Messiah before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before Him. In love, He predestined us for adoption as sons through Messiah Yeshua...” (Ephesians 1:4-5). Themes of adoption, inheritance, and citizenship filled his letter . Amazing!

The first of the seven communities to receive a message from the Lord, their rebuke cut straight to the heart, and is a stark reminder for us today . . .

To the angel of Messiah’s community in Ephesus write: “Thus says the One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks in the midst of the seven golden menorot: I know all about your deeds and your toil and your patient endurance, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. You have tested those who call themselves emissaries and are not, and have found them to be liars. You have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and you have not grown weary .

But this I have against you, that you have forsaken your first love . Remember then from where you have fallen. Repent and do the deeds you did at first . If not, I will come to you and remove your menorah from its place—unless you repent.

Yet you have this going for you, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Ruach is saying to Messiah’s communities. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to eat from the Tree of Life, which is in the Paradise of God .” Revelation 2:1-7

The heart of the city was fueled by worship of Artemis , the goddess of fertility. Known also as “The Queen of Heaven” and “The Perpetual Virgin,” Artemis was one of the most revered of the Greek deities. Her temple, originally built in 600 B.C. by Sardis's King Croesus, was considered to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world . As protector of the city, Artemis was very powerful. Ephesus was chosen as “neokoros” for her temple, responsible for the purity of worship given to her. People would flock to the city and deposit money in her temple like a bank , believing Artemis would make them successful, powerful, and rich. Money was borrowed at high interest rates, causing the wealth of the city to swell.

Situated outside the city, her temple sat in the middle of a swamp. A boundary of space surrounded every temple, creating a sacred enclosure called “paradise.” This word “paradise” was borrowed from the Persian language meaning “garden,” and found its way into the Septuagint—the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures—which was read by the early church. This sacred enclosure was a safe haven for criminals , an asylum sanctioned by the city. The size of the paradise could vary from ruler to ruler. In 41 B.C., Mark Antony expanded the borders of the sacred enclosure to encompass 1/4th of the city, giving free reign to petty criminals, increasing corruption. In the first century A.D., Ceasar Augustus returned the borders to their original boundary, only to have the perimeter swell again during the reign of Domitian.

Inside the paradise for Artemis a sacred tree grew , called “The Tree of Life.” Many cultures attributed life-giving properties to trees, but this tree that fed criminals stood in stark contrast to the Tree of Life mentioned in the paradise of Eden found in Genesis 2:8.

“To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to eat from the Tree of Life, which is in the Paradise of God” (Revelation 2:7).

The context could not be clearer to the early believers in Ephesus. This message was a direct affront to the gods of their city . This promise given to them through John's revelation clearly established Yeshua's supremacy and superiority over the gods of the earth. The inferior reality of their natural world would be supplanted by the superior promise of the spiritual realm— Everlasting Life in the Presence of God .

What to Expect in Ephesus Today

I thought I knew what to expect as we approached the ancient ruins. I wasn’t prepared for a stroll through a towering tree-lined road leading into a city that had more history than we could take in during our brief time there. Though only 10% of the the ancient city has been uncovered and restored , the ruins are breathtaking in nature and in scope, as this site has been continually inhabited since 6,000 B.C. Wow!

We parked our car at the south parking lot to access the historical site ( located here ). A well-maintained street of vendors with shaded covering gave a nice place to come back and rest from the sun, do some shopping and eat a meal to carry us through the day.

Once a leading trade city on the Aegean coast, today the ancient port is completely covered with soil and dust , leaving the ruins four miles from the seashore. The remains of Harbour Street are still intact, where you can walk on its marble slabs that connect directly to the Great Amphitheater , the largest of its kind in the ancient world. This amphitheater, which seats 25,000 people, is the site where the entire city came together in an uproar over the Apostle Paul's assertion that “handmade gods are not gods at all.” Thankfully, a near riot was averted and Paul left the city unscathed (see Acts 19:21-40).

Other notable features of Ephesus include : the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (located outside the ancient city), once considered one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World; the Library of Celsus which once held more than 12,000 scrolls; the Temple of Hadrian , one of the most elegant monuments of the city; and the Terrace Houses , an excavation site of luxurious residential homes first constructed in 200 B.C.

50 miles south of the ancient city, there is the Miletus Archaeological Site , the place where the Apostle Paul gathered the elders of the church to give his final emotional goodbye (Acts 20:17-38), knowing he would never see their faces again. Why Christians Should Visit

Ephesus was a city where its natural wealth was astonishing . How could it not? Within its boundaries it contained one of the seven wonders of the ancient world! In the spiritual realm, Ephesus contains a wealth of spiritual deposits, too —treasures that are ready to be accessed by those who have their senses trained to discern (see Hebrews 5:14).

What are these treasures? A spiritual inheritance that believers in Messiah Yeshua have the right to possess, having been adopted into the family of God. An inheritance of patience , of perseverance , of holding fast to what is right without growing tired or giving up. An inheritance of courage in the face of opposition. An inheritance of love that is pure. And an inheritance of the right to eat from the Tree of Life .

When you come to Ephesus, be prepared with your spiritual senses activated and engaged to receive all the Lord wants to deposit in you!

Like the communities of Philadephia and Thyatira, the ruins of Smyrna are centered in the middle of a busy modern city. Now called Izmir, it's the third most populous city in Turkey. Located on the coast of the Aegean Sea, Smyrna was a major trade route and a wealthy port city in the first century, home to nearly 100,000 residents. It's a vibrant port city still.

The Biblical Significance of Smyrna

Smyrna's impressive ancient acropolis was built on top of a mountain peak rising 1,250 feet high overlooking the sea, giving it the title “ The Crown of Smyrna .” Smyrna was enfolded into the Roman province in Asia in 133 B.C., when the last king of Pergamum died without an heir, bequeathing his entire kingdom to Rome. Joining the western cities of Pergamum and Ephesus, Smyrna competed for name “First City of Asia”—giving themselves the coveted title.

It's highly probable the city's name originates from the ancient Greek word for myrrh—“smýrna”—one of the cities chief exports, a spice associated with death and resurrection . Ancient writers connected Smyrna with the myth of the Phoenix, a bird also associated with myrrh, symbolic of one who dies and is resurrected to new life.

The letter to Smyrna in Revelation Chapter 2 is the shortest of all seven letters to the churches , with the least references to Torah and the Prophets (the Old Testament)—a letter that speaks to suffering and the only letter that speaks of resurrection . The letter begins, “Thus says the First and Last, who was dead and came to life ” (v. 8 ). Again, these words penetrated straight to the heart of the people and their culture. . .

To the angel of Messiah’s community in Smyrna write: “Thus says the First and Last, who was dead and came to life. I know your tribulation and your poverty (yet you are rich), as well as the slander of those who say they are Jewish and are not, but are a synagogue of satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer . Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, so that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life . He who has an ear, let him hear what the Ruach is saying to Messiah’s communities. The one who overcomes shall never be harmed by the second death .” Revelation 2:8-11

The community in Smyrna are the ones who saw themselves as “first.” Additionally, Smyrna had experienced its own “death and resurrection” in 600 B.C., when it was destroyed by the king of Sardis. Not until 330 B.C. did Alexander the Great show up, igniting a “re-birth” of the city, rebuilding and bringing it back to life. The ancient writers and the people of Sardis viewed their own history as having been resurrected from the dead . In Isaiah 44:6, the prophet reminds them with these words: “This is what the LORD says—Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: 'I am the first and I am the last; apart from Me there is no God.'”

The message warns about tribulation and suffering . In the first century, Christians in Smyrna were fiercly opposed by pagans and many in the Jewish community. Christian persecution was at its height —and believers in Symrna encountered severe opposition due to the strong influence of emperor worship there. If you refused to worship the emperor, laws allowed punishment by death or imprisonmen t. Following John's mayrtrdom, a disciple of his named Polycarp was martyred in Smyrna 40 years later at the instigation of some Jewish people. In the face of what they were to suffer, the encouragment was this: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Yeshua offers an eternal crown —a direct contrast to “The Crown of Smyrna” that was temporal and a reminder of their past.

The letter ends with this promise: “The one who overcomes will never be harmed by the second death (v. 11). Interestingly, the second death is not mentioned in Old Testament texts, but references have been found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. To a culture fixated on life, death, and resurrection, this promise in comforting indeed .

Death is not the end. Hope is found in the life of Yeshua the Messiah— and the eternal life He offers to those who believe on His Name.

Built during the Roman period, it was one of the largest basilica structures of its time .

I'd seen pictures before our trip of this location, but nothing can compare to the experience of coming face-to-face with a fully excavated pathway flanked by curved stone archways, one after another. An ancient Roman aqueduct supplies fresh water from a flowing spring into trenches that carry water to the city, remaining functional after 2,000 years of use . Wow!

As a result of their faithfulness, Smyrna carries an incredibly rich inheritance for resilience through trials , commitment that endures , and conquering faith over paralyzing fear . Noted by ancient historians as “the most illustrious city of Asia ” and a “royal city,” Pergamum in all its ruin still has the power to take your breath away. Built on a mountaintop precipice 1,000 feet above the plain—with a sharp dropoff to the city below—we discovered the best way to reach the acropolis was to use the funicular cable cars we stumbled across after our GPS led us onto a dead-end street.

The Biblical Significance of Pergamum

Conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 B.C ., Pergamum had become the seat of government and Roman power by the first century A.D., ruling over the entire province of Asia Minor as the region's capital city. It was a huge center for pagan worship , containing more temples than any other contemporary city, paying homage to sixty-one various gods —including Zeus and Ceasar himself, becoming the first city to create a worship site noting Ceasar as both god and king.

Among the ruins was found an altar dedicated to “The Unknown God” (one of only three altars known with this inscription from that period, the most famous in Athens mentioned by Paul in Acts 17:23). The people of this day routinely sacrificed to the gods. If there was a tragedy, a sickness, or a problem that needed fixing, sacrificing to the “right god” could help. If the known gods provided no relief, the “Unknown God” became Plan B. Many believe this altar was referencing the God of the Hebrews —the only God who forbade an image or idol to be made of Him. All their other gods looked like human beings, but the Hebrew’s God was unseen. To be unseen was to be unknown.

Every word of Messiah Yeshua's message to Pergamum in Revelation chapter 2 challenges and refutes their gods , setting Himself up as the one, true God. It begins with these words, “Thus says the One who has the sharp, two-edged sword (v. 12) . . .”

To the angel of Messiah’s community in Pergamum write: “Thus says the One who has the sharp two-edged sword. I know where you live—where satan’s throne is. Yet you continue to hold firm to My name, and you did not deny your faith in Me even in the days of Antipas, My faithful witness, who was killed among you, where satan resides .”

“But I have a few things against you . You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who was teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before Bnei-Yisrael, to eat food sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality. Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent then! If not, I will come to you soon and make war against them with the sword of My mouth. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Ruach is saying to Messiah’s communities. To the one who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna , and I will give him a white stone —and written on the stone a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it.” Revelation 2:12-17

Of all the governors of the Roman provinces, it was the Roman governor in Pergamum who was given the double-edged sword—giving him the power to determine life and death for an accused person. Believers there witnessed the martyrdom of their church leader Antipas—the only martyr listed in the book of Revelation—yet they held firm to His Name and did not deny their faith . John says of his encounter with Messiah in Revelation chapter 1, “ . . .out of His mouth came forth a sharp, two-edged sword ” (v. 16). This is One with true power and authority !

Satan works overtime to draw our attention away from the Living God and onto ourselves or our own idols of worship—money, luxury, fame, comfort, health, self, and so much more. If the believers in Pergamum could hold fast to His Name and not deny their faith— living in the place where satan's throne was located —then so can we. Our lives are strategically placed for this point in time .

May the testimonies of our lives create examples for the world to see— His love and power at work in us .

What to Expect in Pergamum Today

The ancient city of Pergamum and its acropolis ( located here ) are among the largest remaining ruins of the seven churches of Revelation, second only to Ephesus. Located in the modern region of Bergama, this community was noted as the place “where satan's throne is” and the place “where satan resides” (Revelation 2:13). Knowing this, it brought a whole new awareness to us as we walked these ruins high on a mountain that overlooked the valley below. We couldn't help but think of Yeshua's testing in the wilderness , when the devil led Him up, showing Him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant:

“I'll give to You all this authority along with its glory, because it has been handed over to me and I can give it to anyone I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all this shall be Yours .”

But answering, Yeshua told him, “It is written, ‘ You shall worship Adonai your God , and Him only shall you serve ’” (Luke 4:5-8).

To reach the heights of the ancient city, we took the cable car leading up the mountain . As we wandered across the ruins, we came to stairs leading into a tunnel on the side of the mountain. Following the path, we emerged in front of the steepest theater in the ancient world . We peered down the cliff and that was enough—we didn't want to take one more step! The theater was massive, seating more than 10,000 people . It was built to honor Dionysus, the god of the Theater. He was also the god of the grape harvest, wine, fertility, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, as well as resurrection, renewal, and transformation. His promise to the people was to live a meaningful life now through his control over their wine, and life after death. Pergamum was the “temple keeper” for Dionysus, the official place to teach others about him. Thousands would flock to Pergamum to worship and celebrate him there. Call him the “party god,” for his celebrations always included drunkenness and ritual madness. It was so out of control that for a period of time Rome outlawed the Dionysus practice of worship and its accompanying sexual immorality. It was that bad!

The culture of Pergamum resonates deeply with our culture today. It was here the symbol carried on the Hippocratic Oath originated —a snake coiled around a staff representing Asclepius, their snake god of healing . Patients were interviewed before being accepted for care. If you were elderly or about to give birth, you would immediately be turned away. The lives of babies and old people held no value . Treatments for illness included exercise, dietary changes, rest, and watching a good show in the theater. Really! Those who were healed had their names engraved on pillars of white stone as a testimony to their gods. It's no wonder the overcomers in Pergamum were promised a “white stone with a new name” from the Lord.

Yet in the midst of this powerful, pagan culture, Christianity had a remarkable impact .

The ancient city of Pergamum and its acropolis (located here ) are among the largest remaining ruins of the seven churches of Revelation, second only to Ephesus. Located in the modern region of Bergama, this community was noted as the place “where satan's throne is” and the place “where satan resides” (Revelation 2:13). Knowing this, it brought a whole new awareness to us as we walked these ruins high on a mountain that overlooked the valley below. We couldn't help but think of Yeshua's testing in the wilderness , when the devil led Him up, showing Him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant:

“I'll give to You all this authority along with its glory, because it has been handed over to me and I can give it to anyone I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, a ll this shall be Yours .”

But answering, Yeshua told him, “It is written, ‘ You shall worship Adonai your God , and Him only shall you serve ’” (Luke 4:5-8).

To reach the heights of the ancient city, we took the funicular cable car leading up the mountain . The magnitude of this site truly is awe-inspiring. As we wandered across the ruins, we came to stairs leading into a tunnel on the side of the mountain. Following the path, we emerged in front of the steepest theater in the ancient world . We peered down the cliff and that was enough—we didn't want to take one more step! The theater was massive, seating more than 10,000 people . It was built to honor Dionysus, the god of the Theater. Why Christians Should Visit

Pergamum is a place where kingdoms were in conflict —light versus dark, holiness versus sinfulness, the Kingdom of God versus the kingdom of satan. The level of perversity was so strong here that even the Roman government issued a scathing rebuke. Believers who lived here in the first century did so at the peril of their own lives . And yet, they were commended for holding fast to the Lord and not denying their faith, even when martyrdom was knocking at the door.

This is the heritage for all who have put their faith in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus Christ). As culture around us continues to descend to deeper levels of depravity, we can look to those who came before us and step into the inheritanc e they left behind—receiving a new measure of courage . . . bravery . . . unwavering faith .

Pergamum is a place for all Christians to visit and encounter the heart of Jesus , and leave behind a blessing of your own. He is our Living Hope!

Thyatira holds all the hallmarks of a classic “ middle child”—very fitting, as its letter lands right in the middle of the other messages to Messiah's communities in the book of Revelation. And yet, they received the longest letter of them all, filled with poignant significance.

The Biblical Significance of Thyatira

Unlike other communities of its day, Thyatira had no acropolis on a hill from which to make a defense. Considered weak and unimportant , it was established by the King of Pergamum to provide a buffer from invading forces to his city on high, giving time to rally the troops before the enemy reached his walls.

Thyatira was a blue collar city , filled with hard-working people who were required to join trade guilds in order to make a living . In the first century, it had more guilds than any other town in Asia Minor covering many industries, including those who worked with wool, linen, dyes, leather, and bronze. Each guild had to be approved by the Senate, after which they'd choose a designated god to worship . If you belonged to that guild, this god became your personal god . The God of Israel became the “guild god” for several trades, including dye makers and stonecutters. Feasts were held in the honor of these gods in pagan temples, which included drunkenness and acts of sexual immorality as worship.

Most famous were its dye facilites, allowing Thyatira to become a center of trade in purple cloth (a color now known as “Turkish Red”). Purple was extremely important. Under the Roman class structure, colors revealed your rank in society . Only certain classes of people could wear purple: the Emperor, Senators, and Equestrians, who were members of the Roman calvary. It's no wonder that while traveling through Philippi, Paul and Silas met Lydia from Thyatira, a seller of purple cloth and a Gentile worshiper of God. Philippi was her target market—it was the hometown of Alexander the Great, and the location of a large Roman colony with a strong military presence. Through her guild, she had become a “God-fearer” (Act 16:14), allowing her to respond favorably to Paul's teaching.

In spite of its humble appearance, Thyatira holds a wealth of spiritual significance , especially as we “connect the dots” between their culture and the message sent to them in Revelation chapter 2.

To the angel of Messiah’s community in Thyatira write: “Thus says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire and feet like polished bronze: I know your deeds and your love and faith and service and patient endurance , and that your last deeds are greater than the first .

“But this I have against you , that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess—yet she is teaching and deceiving My servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her immorality . Behold, I will throw her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation— unless they repent of her doings . I will also strike her children with a deadly disease. Then all of Messiah’s communities will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts , and I will give to each of you according to your deeds.

“But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold to this teaching and have not learned the so-called ‘deep things’ of satan—I place on you no other burden. Only hold firm to what you have until I come . To the one who overcomes and guards My deeds until the end, ‘I will give him authority over the nations and he shall rule them with an iron rod as when clay pots are broken into pieces.’

Even as I have received from My Father, so I will give him the morning star . He who has an ear, let him hear what the Ruach is saying to Messiah's communities.” Revelation 2:18-29

The message begins, “ Thus says the Son of God...” (v. 18). These words went straight to the heart of the pagan worship of the culture . Thyatira's chief diety was Tyrimnos, the son of Zeus (himself a diety). Another was the infant son of Domitian (a man who proclaimed himself “ god” and deified his son following his child's early death). In Psalm 2, we read the prophetic royal Messianic decree in which God declares, “ You are My Son—today I have become Your Father.” Let's establish who's the boss!

The message speaks the language of these hard-working people : “ I know your deeds...” (v. 19), “ I will give to each of you according to your deeds...” (v. 23), “ To the one who overcomes and guards My deeds until the end...” (v. 26). It gives a nod to Jeremiah 17:10: “ I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

The message closes with this promise to the overcomer : “ I will give him authority over the nations” (v. 26). Again, this is a direct reference to Psalm 2 where the Lord says, “ Ask of Me, and I will give the nations as your inheritance” (v. 8 ).

From beginning to end, this letter to Thyatira is clear in the message of Messiah Yeshua's supremecy as God of gods, Lord of lords .

The history of Thytira is relatable —the poster child for a middle-class society, this city that was considered unimportant bears all the signs of being overlooked and misunderstood. Even its ruins pale in comparison to the treasures the other communities of Revelation hold. Though some tolerated sexual immorality and received a strong rebuke, this was the faithful community who served, who loved, who endured with patience . . . and who received authority over the nations! Wow!

Sardis was a city of decadence, power, and paganism. With a population of 120,000 in the first century AD, its people were known for loose living, pleasure-seeking, and lovers of extravagance. And yet, it was from this place that the Good News spread rapidly, creating one of the largest Christian communities to impact the culture around them.

The Biblical Significance of Sardis

Sardis is the fifth community in the book of Revelation to receive a message, a rebuke, a warning, and a promise. The ancient city was originally built on a ridge at the top of Mount Tmolus , 5,800 feet high, before the civilization moved down the mountain into the fertile plain below.

In 550 BCE , King Croesus— the richest man in the world —ruled from this impenetrable mountaintop fortress. In his power, he had become arrogant, lazy, and apathetic. One day, a soldier scaled down the city wall to retrieve his helmet that had fallen, unaware he was being watched by an enemy below. The fortress’s vulnerability had been exposed, which led to a surprise nighttime raid and capture of the city by Cyrus the Persian and his troops.

Centuries later, the Lord gave a very strong warning to the believers of this community through the Apostle John in Revelation: “ Wake up! Strengthen what remains …if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you” (Revelation 3:1-6).

To the angel of Messiah’s community in Sardis write: “Thus says the One having the seven spirits of God and the seven stars: I know your deeds—you have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains that was about to die . For I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of My God. So remember what you have received and heard —keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief , and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.

But still, you have a few people in Sardis who have not stained their clothes. They will walk with Me in white , because they are worthy. The one who overcomes thus will be dressed in white clothes; I will never blot his name out of the Book of Life , and will confess his name before My Father and His angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Ruach is saying to Messiah’s communities.” Revelation 3:1-6

To understand the metaphor in this warning, we need to remember Sardis’s history . The believers in Sardis would have made the connection—this was their past legacy. Had they also become arrogant, lazy, and apathetic in the midst of the pagan culture that surrounded them? Have we? It’s time to wake up! God wants us to impact the heart of our culture and our world . Let’s be careful not to compromise, but to shine the light of Messiah and carry His love everywhere we go, in all we say and do. Amen!

What to Expect in Sardis Today

Gabriel and I approached the ancient ruins of Sardis (located here) just in time as the sun was beginning to set, giving us one final hour to explore this magnificent place. The ancient city is breathtakingly beautiful , even in its ruined state.

Alongside the perimeter of the city ran a long agora (Greek for “marketplace,” equivalent to our modern shopping malls). We noticed a number of Christian and Jewish shops mingled together , side by side. Names of Jewish shopkeepers were prominent with their menorahs, and crosses were plentiful. A public identity of faith was clearly on display.

Turning the corner, we entered the synagogue—the largest in the world from its day that has ever been found, unexpectedly discovered in 1962 by a team from Harvard and Cornell. Measuring over 300 feet, it was nearly the length of a football field! The floors retained most of their intricate mosaic patterns , the walls adorned with marble panels of floral and animal designs. At the back was a large marble table that is chest-length in size, and an apse with the “chief seats” for the wise and important. Impressive then—impressive now!

Next to the synagogue remains a huge gymnasium dedicated to the Emperor. It was a place to teach and to pass on their worldview : “Human beings are the center of the universe,” a very anti-God sentiment. Everything was either devoted to God or devoted to self (note: our modern equivalent is the university). The palestra, a large open courtyard , is the place where people trained their bodies to run, wrestle, box, and throw the javelin—in the nude! Behind the gymnasium is a large Roman bathhouse , where great immortality took place. Pagan idols dedicated to their gods are everywhere.

A short 5 minute drive from Sardis Ancient City are the ruins of the Temple of Artemis .

In this Biblical city of “Brotherly Love” we had no idea an encounter with love was waiting—an experience that would become one of the highlights from our trip. ��

The Biblical Significance of Philadelphia

Founded by the King of Pergamum in the 2nd century BCE, the city of Philadelphia was named for the king’s brother Attalus, whose loyalty had rewarded him with the nickname Attalus Philadelphos, literally meaning “one who loves his brother.”

In the first century A.D., Philadelphia was under Roman rule. It stood on an important trade route that connected Rome to significant cities in Turkey and on to the East. The early community of believers had an open door to share the Good News. Three centuries later, paganism would take hold and Philadelphia would become known as “Little Athens” for its dedication to foreign deities.

Philadelphia was also located in a region troubled by earthquakes. In 17 A.D., Philadelphia was devastated by an earthquake. Temples were constructed to be the most secure structures in the city, making this promise highly significant to this community of faith: “He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God” (Revelation 3:12). Only three pillars remain in the ruins of Philadelphia today.

Philadelphia is most familiar to us in the third chapter of book of Revelation, as one of the seven communities of faith which received a message from the Jesus. It was one of two communities of faith whose message received praise and encouragement without a rebuke from the Lord:

To the angel of Messiah’s community in Philadelphia write: “Thus says the Holy One, the True One, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens. I know your deeds . Behold, I have set before you an open door that no one is able to shut—because you have little power, but you have kept My word and have not denied My name. Behold, I will cause those of the synagogue of satan—who say they are Jewish but are not, but lie—behold, I will cause them to come and bow down before your feet, so that they acknowledge that I have loved you!

Because you have kept My word about patient endurance, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is coming upon the whole world to test those who dwell on the earth. I am coming soon— hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown . The one who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the Temple of My God , and he will never leave it. And on him I will write the name of My God and the name of the city of My God—the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God— and My own new Name . He who has an ear, let him hear what the Ruach is saying to Messiah’s communities.” Revelation 3:7-13

What to Expect in Philadelphia Today

Today, very little remains of this ancient city , except a few standing pillars and rubble. The entire site fills less space than a city block. We made it just before closing to walk around the ruins, and get new insights from the caretaker on what this city looked like in its glory days.

Once the gates were closed, we decided to walk the neighborhood to go on a spontaneous “treasure hunt.” As we rounded the corner, we saw a large colorful pink home with three Turkish women sitting outside, chatting. I asked to take a picture with them, and they welcomed me to sit with them.

One woman began talking to me in Turkish (Arabic?), examining my hair, jewelry, and clothing in a very familiar way. It was a bit awkward, but also honoring at the same time. She had a large bandage on her forearm that looked like a wound, so I spoke a blessing for the healing of her wound. Though our conversation was lacking in understanding, brotherly love had found a way to make its mark.

Why Christians Should Visit

To the natural eye, the remains of Philadelphia may hold little value in light of the other treasures Turkey contains. But not so in the spiritual realm! We can choose to see as man sees, or we can model our perspective after God's character: “ For He does not see as a man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). This was the community that kept the word of God and did not deny His name , regardless of the culture they lived in. Their spiritual inheritance continues on .

Let’s start with the pronunciation of the name of this city, okay? Do a Google search and you’ll find multiple instances of the typical Western pronunciation we’ve been used to hearing: Lay-ah-deh-SEE-ah. Travel to Turkey, however, and you’ll find yourself quickly adopting the Turkish sounds: Lay-ah-deh-KEY-ah. It’s a subtle difference, but much more satisfying to pronounce it like the locals as the name rolls off your tongue. Try it! ��

The Biblical Significance of Laodikeia

A village called “Diospolis” (meaning “ The City of Zeus ” ) once stood in this historic place, long before the Seleucid King Antiochus II established a city here named after his wife Laodike in the middle of the 3rd century BC. By the Roman period, Laodikeia was a city of great wealth , renowned in three areas: as a banking center ; as a textile center of black wool woven into garments prized in the Roman world; and for its medical school known worldwide for its powdered eye salve ground from a local stone.

Our introduction to Laodikeia is found, surprisingly enough, in Paul's letter to the community in Colossae. Several times in the book of Colossians, he mentions both communities together (Colossians 2:1, 4:13, 4:15). It was stunning to realize that Paul had also written a letter to the community of Laodikeia, which has been lost:

“When this letter has been read among you, have it read also in Messiah's community of Laodicea. In turn, you should read my letter coming from Laodicea.”

You can't help but wonder what was messages this letter contained that would still be meaningful for the days we're living in now.

Laodikeia is most familiar to us in the third chapter of book of Revelation, as one of the seven communities of faith which received a message from the Jesus. It was the last community of faith to receive a message, a warning, a promise from the Lord .

To the angel of Messiah’s community in Laodicea write: “Thus says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Originator of God’s creation: I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot . Oh, that you were either cold or hot! So because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spew you out of My mouth . This sounds like a rebuke that could be given to many churches in our culture today!

Their rebuke is quite memorable, as they have been known since as “the lukewarm church.” Without a water supply of their own, this community was dependent on piping in hot water from miles away —water that became lukewarm on the journey. Neighboring Colossae had a refreshing cold water supply, and the nearby hills of Hierapolis with its famous hot springs are easily seen from this city. The reminders of this warning were constantly set in front of them.

Though this community did not receive a positive message in John's book of Revelation, it appears they took the rebuke to heart . Church history records this faith community continued to thrive when others had disappeared. Seventy years after John penned Revelation, a bishop here was martyred for his faith. In 363 AD, Laodikeia was given a significant honor as it was the chosen location for a church council.

What to Expect in Laodikeia Today

After spending time at the unexcavated tell of nearby Colossae, Gabriel and I arrived to Laodikeia and were overwhelmed by the vast amounts of ancient artifacts to discover . The site covers approximately 2 miles in area, including the biggest stadium in Anatolia, two theaters, four baths, five agoras, five fountains, two city gates, temples, churches, monumental streets and necropoles.

When you visit, plan for enough time to adequately take in all there is to see. This is not a place you want to rush! A welcoming cafe and gift shop provide shade in the heat and a beautiful place to rest.

The community of Laodicea held a special place of affection in the Apostle Paul's heart, mentioning them in his letter to the Colossians, their neighbors. He wanted to encourage their hearts so that they would be joined together in lov e, having the “riches of the full assurance of understanding, leading to a true knowledge of the mystery of God—that is, Messiah” (Colossians 2:2).

His prayers for the community then are prayers we can step into today as we walk the streets where these words were first heard—powerful prayers for wisdom, understanding, and guarding against deception. Come... receive... and leave your own mark of blessing for others in this place.

Hierapolis, Turkey | A Lesser Known “Holy City” of the Bible

Hierapolis is one of those places mentioned in the Bible that is so easy to miss completely. Mentioned only once in Paul’s letter to the Colossians (4:13), he acknowledges this region through the work of Epaphras—connecting this triad of cities and shared faith found in Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis. So if this is your first time learning about this historical place, you’re not alone!

The Biblical Significance of Hierapolis-Pamukkale

Hierapolis is Latin for “Holy City.” Set high on a hill overlooking the valley below, this Hellenistic city was an impressive place by any standard.

Hierapolis was founded as a thermal spa in the second century B.C., and became a healing center where doctors would use the thermal springs as treatments for their patients. Today this area of Hierapolis is known as Pamukkale (Turkish for “Cotton Castle,” denoting the appearance of the white travertine terraces made by mineral deposits of the water). These thermal waters have drawn many throughout the centuries. Cleopatra would come to this place and use the upper pools for her beauty spa treatments.

During this time, Antiochus the Great sent 2,000 Jewish families to this region from Babylon and Mesopotamia, with more from Judea joining later. And the Jewish congregation continued to grow. By 62 B.C., it is estimated there were as many as 50,000 Jewish people living in Hierapolis .

By the first century AD, Hierapolis was part of the Roman province of Asia, with a still-thriving Jewish population that included a growing community of believers in Messiah Yeshua. The apostle Philip spent the last years of his life here before he was martyred for his faith by being crucified upside-down in 80 AD. A martyrion (church built over the tomb of one martyred for their faith) is located near the spot where it is believed Philip died.

The truly astonishing fact about Hierapolis/Pamukkale—and its Biblical significance—is the importance of the waters that flowed from these hot springs down to the valley below to the communities of Laodicea and Colossae. By the time the hot waters reached Laodicea eleven miles away, the temperature was lukewarm , and the people would have to re-heat the water. In the message given to Messiah’s community of Laodicea in Revelation chapter 3, the community is rebuked for being lukewarm. The symbolism and implications were clear to the people then, and are just as clear to us now!

Known for its mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins, the Hellenistic spa town of Hierapolis was a focal point for visitors since the 2nd century B.C.

What to Expect in Hierapolis-Pamukkale Today

Though it can be a little confusing the first time you visit, the ancient ruins of Hierapolis and the thermal waters of Pamukkale can both be found in one magnificent park that stretches nearly 2 miles long . There are three entrances to the park, but the southern entrance gives the best access to the sights and amenities Gabriel and I needed. We opted to rent a golf cart to see as much of the ruins as possible in the short time we had here. It was a little pricey for this region (around $25 US), but it was by far the best decision of the day!

As we began to make our way to the travertine terraces, the site reminded me of a film stage set for “The Flintstones” animated cartoon series, with marble columns strewn around bases of towering palm trees and a beautiful etched stone archway fit for the height of a child. The day was very warm and humid, but the breeze, palm trees and sunshine reminded us of Santa Barbara back home in California. Thankfully, there was a shaded area next to the terraced water feature that provided a cool place to rest and get something to eat.

Seen from the valley below, the large white deposits glisten in the sunlight , while closer up the icy blue pools of water create a beautiful contrast of color . The marketing team has done a great job to sell the experience! Once here, the place is flooded with people like an overrun Disneyland, and the beautiful pools can only be seen in the far-off distance. It didn't matter, though—the site was still breathtaking in wonder and beau ty . Taking off our shoes, we stepped onto the slippery stones to join the others in a risky walk in the water. We didn’t get far—but it was enough to have enjoyed the experience without falling.

We drove our cart to the top of the mountain to take in the sights from the ancient theater , and drove down through the city streets as we passed the Frontinus Gate and other remains of the city. If we had more time, we would have gone for a swim in Cleopatra's ancient pool , walked through the archaeological museum , and hiked to see the memorial for the Apostle Philip .

Even though we could see evidence of pagan worship that took place throughout the centuries, our hearts were turned to God’s heart for the people of this region and His purposes for this place, still.

The region of Hierapolis-Pamukkale was well-established before the coming of Messiah Yeshua. As Christians, we often think of the early church locations of Jerusalem, Ephesus, Corinth and Colossae, overlooking the other places in Asia minor where the Gospel was spread , as many hearts were turned to the Lord.

Hierapolis-Pamukkale is a remarkable place to come and reflect on the goodness of God who “ ... doesn't wish any to perish, but for all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Walking in the places where God's chosen people once thrived—and where one lost his life living for the Lord—is a sobering reminder for us today. Come with an expectant heart, ready to receive from the Lord... and ready to give!

Colossae, Turkey | Hidden Treasures Waiting to be Found

Most of us who are familiar with Paul's letter to the Colossians might be surprised to learn there is very little of this ancient biblical site that has been uncovered. Turkey contains so much wealth in biblical and historical sites that the resources necessary to excavate these strategic locations often come from other sources. Thankfully, Colossae is one region where plans to excavate are underway!

The Biblical Significance of Colossae

The ancient city of Colossae was a thriving commercial center , built on a major trade route in the Roman Province of Asia Minor. In the 5th century BC, it was a populous city famous for its purple-dyed wool called colossinus . A stream of cool refreshing water flowed from the Lycus River, fed by melting snow and rain from the nearby peak of Mount Cadmus. When Laodicea was established as an economic competitor in the 1st century BC, Colossae lost its importance.

The Colossian community was well known to the church of Laodicea , which is mentioned by John in the book of Revelation. Just 12 miles away, Paul addressed both of the communities in his letter to the Colossians. A third community of Hierapolis (Roman for “Holy City”, mentioned in Colossians 4:13) was five miles up the mountain, and rounded out the triad of cities for trade, commerce, and the growing communities of faith.

From Paul's letters, we learn of at least two Colossian citizens who held influence in the community. Philemon (whose name means “loving”) was a follower of Yeshua and a leader who hosted meetings in his home for believers. Epaphrus (whose name means “lovely”) was a spiritual leader devoted to prayer, and is often given credit as the one who founded the church in Colossae, primarily comprised of Gentile believers (see Colossians 1:21).

Ancient Colossae was rediscovered in 1836, but remains unexcavated. To date, surveys and random discoveries have uncovered 30 inscriptions, over 150 coins, and the identification of a few structures.

It seemed incomprehensible to us that a community so loved by Christians throughout the centuries, made known through Paul's letter to the Colossians, could be a place hiding under the depths of the earth . Because of this, most people don't bother to visit this site. Why would they? Dirt, dust, rocks, and a few ancient fragments scattered around sums up most of what you can see.

Finding the entrance to Colossae is easy ( located here ). A sign and a deserted building let you know you're in the right spot. A well-worn trail weaves up the tell , guiding your steps as you walk on top of a city that once was a place of industry and importance. Without any obvious landmarks in sight, we took in what our eyes could observe— beautiful mountains, lush greenery, and fertile farm land all contributed to a peaceful, scenic setting.

Many come to Colossae as it exists today because of the biblical significance it holds, unaware of an even greater purpose to be found . Back in the book of Genesis, we read the story of Cain's jealousy of his brother Abel that led him to commit the first murder of mankind. God responded by telling Cain, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to Me from the ground” (Genesis 4:10). The land holds memory. This is an incredible spiritual principle! Questions about the history of the land now come into focus as we travel to the places God calls us to go. What happened here? What were the acts of injustice that still cry out to God from this place? What spiritual blessings were deposited here? What is God's heart today over the people and the land? How can we connect our hearts with His to pray the prayers He wants to receive?

With this in mind, we can walk this land with an entirely different mindset. We now have a functional purpose for stepping on the land with a spiritual focus in mind. We can read from Colossians understanding its past, and receive wisdom and revelation from God's heart today. It's such an exciting way to travel!

The Apostle Paul was no stranger to suffering. Yet there were certain places where he seemed to suffer more significant harm than others. He reminded Timothy of “ the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra ” (2 Timothy 3:11). What was the common thread between these three cities, and why was it most difficult for him here?

The Biblical Significance of Antioch Pisidia, Iconium, and Lystra

Our entire trip to Turkey hinged on the words Paul wrote to Timothy of the persecution and suffering he faced in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I had been reading 2 Timothy 3:11 when the Holy Spirit interrupted my thoughts with a strong command: “Go there!” In my ignorance, I had no idea where “there” was, but I immediately knew Gabriel and I would be on our way as soon as we could.

The persecution and suffering Paul experienced in this region should not have been a surprise . These three communities were part of the Roman region Galatia , founded in 300 B.C. by three tribes of Celtic people from mainland Europe called the Gauls. These tribes did not get along with each other. A king from Bithniya (in northern Turkey) hired 20,000 Gauls to become his mercenaries. After they finished their service to the king, the Gauls continued to pillage towns throughout Turkey, finally settling in the central region of the land.

Several hundred years later, Paul arrived in this region, sharing the Good News of Messiah Yeshua, preaching in the synagogues with such conviction that many begged to hear him again. But that same spirit of of murder and hatred remained. The people of Antioch and Iconium banded together with those in Lystra opposed to Paul, stoning him and dragging him outside the city, leaving him as dead. But God! When the disciples surrounded Paul, he miraculously got up on his feet and walked back to the city (Acts 14:19-20).

In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul writes, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rules, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). Paul knew the battle he was facing in this region was spiritual in nature—but he learned to move in the opposite spirit. To bless and not curse. To pray for his enemies, reversing the curse with God's love.

Known as “The Imperial Road”, this roadway built in the 6th century BC was already famous when the city was named after the Seleucid king Antiochus in the 3rd century BC. Antioch later became a free city and the capital of other Roman colonies established in Pisidia.

Key Verse

Jewish people from Antioch Pisidia and Iconium came to Lystra and stoned Paul. They dragged him out of the city, leaving him for dead. While the disciples surrounded him, Paul got up and walked back into the city.

While Antioch may have been the Roman capital of Pisidia and surrounding region back in Paul's day, the importance of its former glory can easily be overlooked now. The town is small, with a charming and modern central area for the people. We wound our way through the village and up the hill to the archeology site, not knowing there was an entrance fee and that somehow we'd be unable to plead our way in with dollars, euros, or debit cards. Needing to find a bank or ATM to get hold of Turkish Lira, Gabriel spotted a man on the street and asked for directions. We were shocked that he spoke perfect English! I believe he was an angel sent to help us on our way. Once we found an ATM and returned to the archeology ruins ( located here ) , it was well worth every effort we had to go through in getting there. From this historic place, Paul gave his longest sermon ever recorded (Acts 13:14-41), leading many people in that day to believe in Yeshua.

Iconium doesn't have the remnants of biblical history to visit like Antioch , and is its complete opposite in terms of size. Now called Konya, it is a major modern city in central Turkey and is known as one of Turkey's most religiously conservative areas for Muslims. We witnessed this dedication first-hand as we entered the outdoor bazaar during the afternoon call to prayer. The men spilled out of the mosques and into the plazas to engage in prayer, as the women sat in the shade and talked quietly with each other. Activity in the bazaar was kept to a minimum, and several shops were closed.

Lystra is the smallest of the three cities and remains unexcavated —currently it is a hilly mound where farmers dig up rare coins and historical fragments of the city. Nearby are the hillsides of Kilistra, where nomadic goat herders graze their flocks and tents are still made by hand as in Paul's day. It was here that we stopped to read the account of God healing a lame man through Paul’s ministry, and the stoning of Paul that resulted in a type of resurrection from the dead. We really wanted to explore the cave churches in the valley below ( located here ), but Google maps didn't quite cut it navigating the rural roads. Instead, we took a wrong turn and ended up in a farmer’s backyard. Next time, we'll be sure to get our directions right.

The region of Galatia that covers Antioch Pisidia, Iconium, and Lystra carries a wealth of spiritual inheritance for Christians today. History has shown these areas were plagued with violence and unrest—yet the Spirit of God sent Paul there on each of his three journeys to move in the opposite spirit . When we go to the places God sends us to go, we have His favor. His anointing. His grace. Miracles, signs, and wonders follow those who believe. Go to these regions expectant for what God will do in your life, too!

Located 100 km from Antioch Pisidia, we chose to go this distance to put us closer to the next leg of our journey. The facility is clean and modern, with a shopping mall next door. We were so thankful for the care of the staff, who helped us take care of a flat tire. That's service!

Paul spent many years in Tarsus after his dramatic conversion. Scholars believe it's here that his vision (2 Corinthians 12:2-4) and supernatural experience took place.

The Biblical Significance of Tarsus

Tarsus is famous for being the birthplace of the Apostle Paul, a significant city that dates back to the Bronze Age. Hittites were first to settle in this region. The word “tarsus” is thought to be derived from a Hittite word which denotes one of their pagan gods. Other rulers followed—the ancient Assyrians, the Persian Empire, and Alexander the Great all added to the history of this city before it came under Roman rule in 103 B.C.

Paul returned to his hometown after meeting the Lord on the road to Damascus, where he was blinded by a great light. God blinded his natural eyes for a few days so that his spiritual eyes would be opened to see. Some scholars believe Paul's vision and supernatural experience (2 Corinthians 12:2-4) took place while here. Paul remained in Tarsus for many years before Barnabas came to retrieve him and take him to Antioch, where they both would be commissioned for ministry.

The Church of Saint Paul was built in the 12th century, with frescoes of the apostles decorating the interior. This modest building with a simple architectural style is now a museum for pilgrims.

What to Expect in Tarsus Today

Tarsus was a significant Roman city and a thriving intellectual center in Paul's day with palaces, marketplaces, roads and bridges, baths and fountains. Very little of this history remains today. As Gabriel and I entered this modern city, we couldn't see any of the grandeur it once held, challenging us to see this biblical place from a spiritual perspective.

The distance between Antioch and Tarsus is a three hour drive. The route took us over a high mountain range, striking us with how challenging it must have been in the first century to travel between these two cities. It gave us a new perspective as we considered the effort it took for Barnabas to collect Paul from Tarsus and bring him back to Antioch to be with the community of believers there.

At Saint Paul's Church in the heart of the city, we found one of the most humble places of worship that has stood the test of time. Formerly a Greek Orthodox church, lack of community has prevented regular services, though local and international congregations are still able to congregate here. In the brochure provided, we learned that the church is now operating as a museum, but “pious Christians come here frequently for pilgrimage.” Since this was our first trip, we thought it was humorous we didn't feel we fit into the pious category. It's a clever way to encourage people to return. Maybe one day!

Outside the church is a paved walkway that winds its way through a tree-lined garden area. We were surprised to see so many ancient relics here—in the courtyard, in the garden, and in a former parking lot next to the property. Pieces of history that would be on proud display in any museum were left behind, placed on the ground with no one to admire or appreciate their worth. Turkey is a nation rich with treasures like these!

Less than 5 minutes away is the location of Saint Paul's well , a site to commemorate Paul's birth in Tarsus, as is an ancient road from the Roman Empire period. The Old Tarsus Houses are another historic site in this area worthy of a visit, if you have the time.

Tarsus carries a wealth of spiritual inheritance. It was here Paul's foundation of faith grew after his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus. Out of increase of spiritual vision and encounter, he was inspired by the Spirit of God to write nearly 25% of the books found in the New Testament. Would you go anywhere the Lord sends you? Even if it may seem dangerous and others may not understand? Something profound takes place when we set our feet in the places God calls us to go.

I never dreamed that one day God would send us to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and Iraq — all places that have seen times of war and unrest…. all places He has sent us to go. I’ve long carried a YES in my heart, and I think that has made all the difference. There is joy in the journey that connects our hearts with His.

7 Easy Steps on How to Travel in the Middle East Without Fear

Inspired by Gabriel’s logical mind and organizational abilities, I’ll put what we’ve learned over the years into several easy steps:

PRAY. You must know that you know God is calling you to this area, and that it’s not just a thirst for adventure that’s leading you forward.
Maintain a willing heart to go to the places God is sending you to go. Don’t be like Jonah! He eventually got to Ninevah (modern-day Mosul, Iraq), but he hit some bumps along the way. Learn from his mistakes.
Form authentic and meaningful relationships with those serving in the countries you believe God is leading to you visit — then support your new friends with your finances and your prayers.
Learn about the culture and customs. The more you know what’s customary and expected, the better you’re able to engage with the people. If you don’t know, ask.
Keep your eyes open to your environment and your senses activated for what’s taking place around you. Don’t get trapped into a situation where fools rush in and the wise fear to tread.
Be aware of the spiritual atmosphere, just as you are of your natural surroundings. Spiritual activity is easily detected while traveling in the Middle East — you may even encounter angels as you go.
Remind yourself of God’s goodness as you travel. Record the miracles, the God-encounters and God-surprises that leave you in awe. Thank the Lord for what He is doing and for what He has done. To God be the glory!

How to Pray in Faith for Your Family

People of great faith inspire me. People of faith who have journeyed through life encountering difficult trials and held fast to the Lord inspire me even more. I learn so much from them.

Patricia tells a story of her father-in-law and the prayers she would pray for years for him to encounter Jesus. She prayed faithfully, even though it angered him to know she was praying. He didn’t want Jesus. He preferred hell. And he let her know it, time and again.

But Patricia had a promise from God and a love for her father-in-law that no amount of scorn could touch.

It was Patricia’s childlike faith that believed God for His promise that “all of her household would be saved.” It’s a pattern found throughout Scripture, beginning in Genesis when God saved Noah and his household from the flood. Entire families were saved from the plague of death during the Passover from bondage in Egypt. Joshua spoke on behalf of his household, that “we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). And in the book of Acts, a Gentile named Cornelius was saved along with his entire household (see Acts 11:14).

Patricia trusted so strongly in God’s promise for her and her household, that because He was the Righteous Judge, she believed He would be faithful to His word—even into eternity. If she stood before Him in eternity and her family was not present in heaven, she had faith that God would call them into His presence based on His promise to her.

She would share this sentiment with her father-in-law every time she saw him, which only made him angrier. Years later, Patricia received a phone call from her father-in-law who was in the hospital. He was dying. When she arrived to see him, he told her that he was ready for heaven. He had decided to become a follower of Jesus. It’s a beautiful story, but it doesn’t end there. Patricia’s father-in-law received a miraculous healing, and ended up walking out of the hospital. He went on to become a pastor, and spent many years in the ministry.

As much as you love your family members, God loves them more. Jesus lives to make intercession for them. The Holy Spirit takes on our prayers and intercedes for them “with groans too deep for words” (Romans 8:26). There is a constant chorus in heaven voicing prayers and declarations over your family. Join your voice with theirs. Pray with your spirit, and with understanding.

‘But praises rise to God, for He paid attention to my prayer and answered my cry to Him! I will forever praise this God who didn’t close his heart when I prayed and never said no when I asked Him for help. He never once refused to show me His tender love” (Psalm 66:19-20). The Lord bends His ear to listen to you.

Scatter Light

I like spending time with smart people. Learning something new can be interesting and fun. For example, take this job description a chemist gave when asked what she did for a living. “I scatter light.”

Doesn’t that intrigue you? I had no idea what this meant, and knew I had to learn more. From Wikipedia, I discovered this:

“Light scattering is a form of scattering in which light in the form of propagating energy is scattered. Most objects that one sees are visible due to light scattering from their surfaces . Indeed, this is our primary mechanism of physical observation .” The spiritual applications of this principle are so cool!

Jesus said we are the “light of the world.” Taken in the context of the definition shown above, we scatter: separate in different directions and to different places. As we go, we propagate : the substance of our light is in the form of energy by the Holy Spirit that makes our faith known to many people. This causes us to be seen by others and is their primary means of observing us . Wow!!

In a practical sense, how do you put this into action? Here are just a few suggestions: Walk with joy . Look to see the one in front of you. Recognize the value of each person. Smile! Be bold and take risks—remember that you carry the kingdom of God wherever you go.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on a lamp stand so it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men so they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven .” Matthew 5:14-16
